Dan, you are absolutely right. I am kind of ashamed of myself for having the same closed mind about Toraja that I did about Ethiopia. I deserved to be called out on it.

sounds like a unique experience. I’ve always wanted to visit sulawesi and now even more so.
I tend to nod my head in agreement at most things you write but i’ll have to disagree (slightly) with your ‘take’ on southern ethiopia…..yes, i do realise you were exaggerating things….and it was funny.
I was very sceptical (I anticipated it would be a complete circus) before visiting the omo valley but found it to be one of the most amazing travel experiences I’ve had. I may have my ‘head in the clouds’ but apart from one tribe (the mursi) that I visited, what I saw seemed to be a relatively authentic snapshot of their ‘normal’ life.

I agree with u on the pollution n waste n overcrowded Bali. I’m a Bali born n breed originally from Gianyar although now I live overseas because of my work. I’m offended by the BTB’s article and I’m not even a tourist. We locals have to put up with the situation and only been put off by the stupid birocracy if we were going to do something about it. Ive been around most places in Indonesia and they are pretty much the same maybe because of the country’s economy, but because other places are not so much tourist oriented. The people tend to be a little more ‘gentle’. Definitelyioneed to bring back cultural tourism in Bali!!!

You are having more fun on your trip than I did on ours. Maybe we should have hitchhiked! I noticed from the bus window that the gas station attendants in Thailand were always laughing & goofing around. Must be somthing about the job.
